Project

Titular Minorities: post-communist ethnic relations between indigenous minorities and Russians in five (semi-) autonomous regions of the Russian Federation'

Acronym Titular Minorities / Project ID:35
Start date 01/04/1999
End date 01/04/2004
Description

The proposed research is a continuation and extension of the INTAS funded survey 'Russian minorities in Belorussia, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Kazakhstan' (Ref. Nr. INTAS-94-1745) and the NWO funded research 'Russians as minorities, post-communist ethnic relations in five (semi-)autonomous regions of the Russian Federation ' (File : 047.005.17.96). The design and questionnaire will now be applied to Russian majorities and titular minority groups in five republics of the Russian Federation, viz.: Udmurtia, Karelia, Adygeya, Yakutia, and Kalmykia. The aim is 1. to determine the relation between (majority and minority) nationalism and negative evaluations of (majority and minority) outgroups, 2. to determine the strength of the relevant individual and social predictors of nationalism and outgroup evaluations, 3. to compare the variations in strength of the determinants of nationalism and negative outgroup evaluations across the five regions and 4. to integrate the information under aim 1. to 3. with previously gathered data of the aforementioned INTAS and NWO researches.
