General Information

The Third Summer School in Lisbon will explore patterns of incorporation of migrants in European countries. Ercomer Summer schools take an eclectic approach to social scientific research, encouraging diversity in methodological perspectives and the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods

The three advanced research training summer schools (1997-1999) have been offered to young researchers working on migration issues by the E.U. in the context of the TMR programme. For detailed information on   'Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR)' please visit: DG XII - Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR)

The three summer schools were divided in three broad themes. The first summer school held in Hydra (Greece) dealt with the question of why people migrate. The second school in Barcelona (Spain) investigated the responses of host-societies to the presence of migrants

The summer schools have had the following objectives:

  • to offer advanced pre-doctoral (at least year 2 of a doctoral programme) or postdoctoral researchers an opportunity to learn new methodologies and techniques of social science research applied to issues of migration and ethnic relations
  • to stimulate the application of new procedures and methods to research topics brought to the summer school by the participants
  • to encourage young researches to present their ideas and approaches to the critical scrutiny of established experts in the field
  • to facilitate the development of a research network among the participants

The summer schools conform to a standard training model which is based upon principles of active learning. The training models contains three component parts.

  1. Lectures (presentations from leading experts on new approaches and methodologies. These presentations will be accompanied by appropriate documentation).
  2. Research panels (participants present their own work for discussion. Participants will be expected to make a short presentation at the end of the summer school on what new strategies they intend to adopt.)
  3. Research workshops (discussing techniques and methods and the way they can be employed).
